OCPP (Open Charge Point Protocol) is an open protocol widely used to connect an EV charge point with a management platform, often called a CSMS.
What is OCPP used for?
Without a common protocol, each manufacturer could impose a proprietary approach. OCPP standardizes exchanges to start or stop a session, report charge point status, send energy meters and support remote operations.
How does it work?
In a typical setup, the charge point connects to a CSMS server. The protocol carries structured messages (status, start, stop, errors, meters). The platform can then display activity, alert teams and store session history.
- Session start and stop
- Status and availability reporting
- Energy meter values
- Remote operational commands
